A recent survey found that just 7% of employers use objective quality information to evaluate a health plan. In fact, 89% don’t use or are unfamiliar with any of the objective sources in the survey. Yet 59% of these same employers cite quality ratings as an important factor when choosing a plan.*
Clearly, an information gap exists. This gap is even more troubling when you consider the bottom-line implications of going with a poor quality plan or provider. A 2014 Healthgrades report found a higher rate of complications at hospitals that received the lowest quality ratings. The report also found that better quality can result in lower overall costs — the direct cost of caring for patients who experience complications averages nearly twice as much as caring for patients who don’t.†
